Friends, what happened just a few days ago in the Tennessee House of Representatives is shameful.

In an extreme and unprecedented move, Tennessee’s Republican supermajority took partisan, retaliatory action in expelling two Democratic legislators who participated in a protest against gun violence at the Capitol -- just days after the tragic Covenant School shooting.

This is not only an attack on these two leaders, it’s an attack on our very democracy, leaving tens of thousands of people in Memphis and Nashville without representation in their state legislature.

Look, our country was built on peaceful protest.

We were founded on the peaceful dissent of people looking for freedom and equality, and to this day protest remains a Constitutionally-protected right.

Before they were thrust into the national spotlight, Justin Jones of Nashville and Justin Pearson of Memphis were simply legislators working for a safer state for kids to grow up in. They were young members of the Tennessee Black Caucus. They were fairly elected by the voters of their districts to represent citizens’ best interests in the Capitol. And right now, they need our support.

While Nashville's Metro Council has voted unanimously to reinstate Justin Jones to his seat, Justin Pearson has not yet been reinstated -- and regardless of any actions taken by local government, both legislators will need to run again in a special election later this year in order to serve their full terms.
