Over the last five years, the Center for Big Bend Studies (CBBS) has worked to establish the presence of an early human record in deeply stratified sites. These efforts have produced evidence of a rich Indigenous history of adaptation to the ever-changing Chihuahuan Desert. Join CBBS Director Bryon Schroeder, Ph.D., who will share details highlighting the latest archeological findings, the importance of this research, and future opportunities for students and researchers with the Center for Big Bend Studies.

Texas citrus is synonymous with red grapefruit, and with good reason, since the quality and beauty of red grapefruit grown in the Rio Grande Valley is unrivaled. During this presentation, Dr. David Laughlin, assistant professor at the Texas A&M University Kingsville Citrus Center, will talk about the origins of grapefruit and how it came to be established as the flagship of citrus in Texas. How and where grapefruit is grown and harvested will be presented.

Join us for this unique presentation by Renea Dauntes, assistant researcher and archivist for the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum in Canyon, Texas, focusing on how women saved the west. From hope chests to museums, and everything in between, this presentation focuses on how women were originators, caretakers, and stewards whose efforts helped retain important parts of history. The myriad ways knowledge was transferred from generation to generation were all subject to the guiding hands of dedicated women.
