MESSAGE FROM CATHERINE

Dear Neighbor,

On Wednesday evening, former Fire Commissioner Don Carmignani was beaten with a metal object on Laguna and Chestnut. Don remains in the hospital in serious condition, and SFPD has arrested a suspect who remains in custody.

This type of violence has no place in our city. We need more officers on our streets and we need the violence to end. We need action now.

We must give our law enforcement agencies the resources and support they need to turn the tide on crime in this city. As a former prosecutor, public safety has always been my top priority at the Board of Supervisors. In recent weeks, I have fought for an additional $25 million for SFPD to keep officers on our streets, and I advocated for a new SFPD contract that will increase officer pay to improve recruitment and retention. We must keep fighting.

The night of the attack, I was in close contact with our Northern Station officers and the District Attorney. I shared pictures sent to me that evening, and SFPD used those images to bring a suspect into custody. I am extremely grateful for our law enforcement agencies’ swift response and dedication to public safety in San Francisco. But gratitude isn’t enough.

As I pray for Don, his family, and his recovery, I want to be very clear: we cannot tolerate this kind of criminal activity. Not in the Marina, not anywhere. Everyone has the right to feel safe in San Francisco, and that means the city has to stop playing politics with public safety.

Please know that I share your outrage and your commitment to creating a safer San Francisco. My team and I will keep following this case and others closely, and we are available to discuss any ideas or concerns you may have.

Sincerely,

Catherine
