This is not the independent American judiciary our Founding Fathers intended.

This month, we all became witness to something historic: A former President of the United States, and current Republican presidential candidate, was charged by a Democrat New York City District Attorney in what many pundits agree is nothing more than a political prosecution. This is not the independent American judiciary our Founding Fathers intended.

I, like every lawyer, took the “Attorney’s Oath,” swearing to live by and dedicate my life to upholding the rule of law. By nature, the rule of law is applied and enforced universally, regardless of societal status, circumstance, or (most relevantly today) political party. That basic operating principle is under attack.

Repeatedly over the last few years, we have seen progressive prosecutors manipulate the rule of law to bully and obstruct President Trump and those of us who share his political views. Judicial attacks have repeatedly been waged against our elections, our freedom of speech, and our freedom to assemble.

At the same time, radical prosecutors are pushing to abandon the rule of law for dangerous criminals and even divert critical resources away from law enforcement officers, hindering the abilities of these brave men and women to do their jobs effectively. More specifically, they are pushing for reduced sentences, legalized drug use, and relaxed bail standards, which release potentially dangerous criminals back on our streets with more ease and less accountability.

The way that I see it is this: There is a difference between those we are mad at and those we are scared of. The judicial system is meant to protect society from those we are scared of, not score political points against those with whom we disagree. It’s about time those serving as District Attorney recognize the difference.

The “Attorney’s Oath” was drafted and agreed to, not for the benefit of the prosecutor, but for the benefit of the public. No one – not even the justice system itself – is above the law. We must begin to universally enforce the rule of law without personal prejudice or political bias, and remember that this is a tool to improve our communities, not win the next election.

If we want a local government that protects local people, we must elect conservative District Attorneys that are rooted in our community and dedicated to the equal application of the rule of law.
