Honoring the return of the sturgeon

With April comes the return of the sturgeon and the annual Sturgeon Feast [[link removed][0]=AZXDef6luokJZ-PmxFOt6BEj5j5-FeTfQBTjvczQAG3seI62SVKF6AIG_rYo2Ki_HdQa_onPPsMw9-ryKW646OlRF5o5XJX_6GkpHj7qGcMEAzFjV1qw_Pn1jIy44iyAwko&__tn__=%2CO%2CP-R] where the Menominee people and friends gather to celebrate a tradition that was key to our people’s survival in the past and continues to be vital for our future generations.

My dad, Hilary “Sparky” Waukau, often talked about the traditional sturgeon blessing held along the shores of the pristine Wolf River in Keshena. "It's up to all of us to protect the blessings bestowed upon our ancestors and the rights of our people. The Sturgeon Feast and blessing is one of the most important legacies we leave our children, who in turn will leave it for their children,” he told me.

We can continue the work of my father, and past and present tribal leaders, by voting to protect the blessings from our ancestors and the rights of our people. When we vote, we are using our voices to protect waters like the Wolf River that allow the sturgeon, and wild rice beds to thrive so we can leave a better world for our children in perpetuity.

I feel my father with me as I do this work, and I know he’ll be with me when I cast my vote this coming Tuesday, April 4. When I use my voice at the polls, I am continuing his legacy.

The April 4 election is Tuesday, April 4. Find the voting information you need here [[link removed]]:

First, check to see if you’re registered to vote here [[link removed]]. If you’re not registered, you can register in-person when you vote. Just make sure you have a proof of residence document for your registration (this can be a letter from a tribal government if it has your name and address on it) and a valid photo ID to vote (this can be a tribal ID).

Know what’s on your ballot. You can find a sample ballot on MyVote here [[link removed]].

If you haven’t yet returned your absentee ballot, you should plan to drop it off in-person or vote in-person at your polling location [[link removed]]. If you would like to drop off your absentee ballot in-person, you should contact your clerk to find out where you can return your absentee ballot. When voting in-person on Election Day, Tuesday, April 4, make sure you bring a valid photo ID and know where your polling place is [[link removed]] (your polling location may have changed this year). All polling locations are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Election Day.
